Welcome to the Toledo Museum of Art’s annual report.

Here, we celebrate not only what we accomplished in fiscal year 2014, but the people who made it happen.

Who, not just what, matters immensely to us—whether that be our curators and staff, visiting artists, docents and volunteers, visitors, or, especially you, our donors. Your contributions make engagement with the visual arts possible for this community. By donating to the Toledo Museum of Art, you keep it alive for future generations. For that, we heartily thank you.

The year 2014 was a fantastic one for the Museum. Visitors were given a taste of Paris thanks to our collaboration with the Louvre for The Art of the Louvre’s Tuileries Garden, and they revisited a crucial moment in Northwest Ohio’s history with The Battle of Lake Erie. Visitors were also given the opportunity to meet internationally recognized artists, like painter Sean Scully and light artist Erwin Redl. Even our youngest patrons, in the Art After School program, received one-on-one time with the highly regarded artist and collagist Varujan Boghosian.

Another noteworthy aspect of 2014 we explore here is the steadfast dedication of our docents and ambassadors. Our docents’ commitment to education was personified by one of their own, the late Emma Leah Bippus, when she posthumously endowed our director of education position. And the ambassadors’ pledge to fundraise, fundraise, fundraise came together beautifully during their first-ever Art in Bloom event, a remarkable success. Kudos to them and to all our loyal volunteers.

Lastly, a note about this year’s format—as you see here, the annual report has been issued online only. This is the second time the Museum has released an electronic report, in keeping with its efforts to go green in as many ways as it can. If you like what you see here, we ask that you share it: tweet about it, post it on Facebook, or simply forward a link to this site via email. Spreading the Museum’s message is one of the easiest ways to show your support.

And again, a sincere thank you to our board, staff, visitors, volunteers and donors—you inspire and help create the energy that brings our galleries to life.

Sincerely,
Brian Kennedy

The Art of Seeing Art

The Art of Seeing Art

Filled with colorful images from the Toledo Museum of Art’s world-renowned collection, The Art of Seeing Art: A, B & See encourages children to search for details beginning with each letter of the alphabet. The Museum’s second children’s book (the first, Glassigator, was published in 2007) is designed as a fun way to foster close looking skills while immersing children and adults in the beauty and wonder of art. “When we started this project two years ago, we wanted to create a collaborative looking experience for parents and their little ones,” said Kathy Danko-McGhee, the former Emma Leah Bippus director of education who led the project. “I think we succeeded in creating a fun art book that enhances preschool children’s critical thinking and cognitive skills.”

Toddler Tours

Toddler Tours

The Toledo Museum of Art and the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library engaged their smallest patrons in a new way with the debut of a sensory literacy program for toddlers in February 2014. Toddler Tours, a two-part experience that brings books as well as art to life for children ages 18 to 36 months, serve as a sequel to the Museum’s nationally recognized Baby Tours. The free public program trains toddlers on visual and textual literacy, dual skills that will be important for these digital natives, many of whom are as proficient with tablet computers as they are with wooden blocks.

“Children today are inundated with images from birth and will probably communicate visually more than any generation before,” said Kathy Danko-McGhee, Ph.D., the Museum’s former Emma Leah Bippus director of education and developer of the Baby and Toddler Tours. “There is a real need for experiences that engage all their senses and encourage them to identify and make sense of color, shape and texture.” The program encourages the expansion of vocabulary by teaching children new words associated with works of art.

Investing in the Future

Education + Children

Art After School

Since its founding, TMA’s Art After School program has given students from local community centers an opportunity to connect with art. These experiences extend beyond hands-on studio work—students enjoy one-on-one time with renowned visiting artists, practice visual literacy skills in the galleries and learn the histories of their favorite painters and sculptors. (Among the most popular? Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse.)

Fiscal year 2014 was a banner year for the program—more than 700 children participated. But even more significant, said Jennifer Bandeen, manager of community outreach, was the chance for students to express themselves. “Artmaking provides them an outlet they might not otherwise have,” Bandeen said. “With the children in Art After School, we see real, positive outcomes from enabling them to communicate visually.”

Art After School is supported in part by grants from The Stranahan Foundation and The David C. and Lura M. Lovell Foundation.

Emma Bippus leads a group discussion.

Emma Bippus Endowment

When it comes to exceptional dedication to TMA’s mission, its docents are among the finest examples. Few embodied that devotion more thoroughly than Emma Leah Bippus (1913–2011), a longtime volunteer and supporter of the Museum who requested that her estate be used to create an endowed staff position, the Emma Leah Bippus Director of Education. Endowed titles allow Museum patrons to provide financial support by funding a particular staff position.

Emma’s choice was fitting, considering her tireless advocacy for learning over her decades of service. She began her involvement in 1947, turning the then-new docent program into a model for other institutions. Her passion for arts education was nationally recognized when, in 1966, she was honored by Lady Bird Johnson, first lady of the United States, with a medal for her commitment to the field. “She was a person who made her mark on the way people, from children to adults, use museums to discover the arts,” said Carol Bintz, chief operating officer. “Her funding of this position just shows how important education was to her. It honors her and her advocacy.”

Giving back to others

Docent
Program

Nearly 20,000 students a year go on docent-led tours of TMA.

Docents on the Frontline of Visual Literacy

In 1947, then-assistant director Otto Wittman initiated a gallery guide program similar to one at the Nelson-Atkins Museum in his native Kansas City, Missouri. In the seven decades since, members of the docent corps—dedicated, volunteer gallery educators—have served as the frontline in the Museum’s art education efforts. Fiscal year 2014 was no different, as docents became the “ground troops” for TMA’s visual literacy initiative, piloting and refining training and tour techniques that were put in place for visitors and staff. The new technique’s probing questions and interactive methods helped to launch many vibrant discussions between docents and visitors in 2014.

“Docents have always engaged visitors with these kinds of critical viewing skills,” said Jeanne Rudski, the 2014 docent president. “But we’ve been given a new focus and new approaches that enhance the experience for visitors. The positive response from them has made it so rewarding for us.”
